Báo New York Times nêu tên bà Jacqueline Nguyễn trong số sáu người có khả năng được bổ nhiệm thành Thẩm phán Tòa Thượng thẩm, sau khi ông Antonin Gregory Scalia, vị thẩm phán kỳ cựu, qua đời.
Năm nay 51 tuổi, bà Jacqueline Nguyễn “sang Hoa Kỳ năm 10 tuổi cùng gia đình, sau khi chính quyền Nam Việt Nam sụp đổ năm 1975”, tờ báo Mỹ viết.
“Hiện đã là thẩm phán Toà Phúc thẩm Hoa Kỳ, bà được Tổng thống Obama bổ nhiệm vào tháng 5/2012,” trang báo cho hay.
Các báo tiếng Việt cho biết bà tên là Nguyễn Thị Hồng Ngọc, sinh năm 1965 tại Đà Lạt, Lâm Đồng, Việt Nam.
Một trang web của người Việt tại Hoa Kỳ viết rằng cha bà, cựu thiếu tá Quân lực Việt Nam Cộng hòa Nguyễn Bình đưa gia đình sang tị nạn tại Hoa Kỳ năm 1975, ban đầu ở Trại Pendleton, sau đó định cư ở Los Angeles.
Các trang báo cũng nói khi mới sang Hoa Kỳ cô bé Jacqueline “đi phụ bán bánh với mẹ để kiếm sống”

Tốt nghiệp Occidental College và trường Luật UCLA, bà đã từng hành nghề luật, chủ yếu trong các vụ kiện tụng dân sự, và sau đó giữ các chức vụ trong bộ máy tư pháp ở California, theo New York Times.
T̀háng 5/2012, với số phiếu 91-3, bà được phê chuẩn trở thành thẩm phán Tòa Phúc thẩm Liên Bang Hoa Kỳ Khu Vực 9 (Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals).
Ngoài bà Jacqueline Nguyễn, năm nhân vật được tờ New York Times nêu lên là các “ứng viên tiềm năng” lên thay vị trí củ̃a ông Antonin Scalia là các ông Merrick B. Garland, (63 tuổi), Padmanabhan Srikanth Srinivasan (48 tuổi, sinh tại Ấn Độ), Cory Booker (46 tuổi, thượng nghị sỹ New Jersey), các bà Kamala D. Harris (51 tuổi, người gốc Á – Phi), Patricia Ann Millet (52 tuổi).
Cùng thời gian, một tờ báo khác ở Hoa Kỳ nêu ra tên bảy ứng viên tiềm năng vào chức tân thẩm phán Toà Thượng Thẩm.
Họ là Jane Kelly, Sri Srinivasan, Amy Klobuchar, Merrick Garland, Paul Watford, Pam Karlan và Jacqueline Nguyễn.
Trang Vox.com viết rằng nếu được bổ nhiệm, bà Nguyễn sẽ là người Mỹ gốc Đông Á đầu tiên nắm chức vụ này.
Tuy nhiên, trang web này cũng cho rằng hiện khó biết bà Jacqueline Nguyễn sẽ là một thẩm phán Tòa Thượng thẩm ra sao vì bà “như một trang giấy trắng’ (blank slate), hàm ý không có thành tích biểu quyết rõ rệt.
Trái lại, người vừa tạ thế năm 79 tuổi, thẩm phán Antonin Scalia, có quan điểm bảo thủ, nổi tiếng với các quyết định làm biến đổi lịch sử ngành tư pháp và chính trị Mỹ.

Judge Jacqueline H. Nguyen has served as a United States District Judge in the Central District of California in Los Angeles since 2009. Judge Nguyen was born in Dalat, Vietnam, and in 1975, she fled the country as a girl along with her family as Saigon was in the process of falling during the latter stages of the Vietnam War. Her family was placed at a refugee camp in Camp Pendleton, California, where they lived in a tent city for over one month before settling in the Los Angeles area. She received her A.B. from Occidental College in 1987, and her J.D. from UCLA School of Law in 1991. Judge Nguyen began her legal career at the law firm of Musick, Peeler & Garrett LLP, where she was a litigation associate from 1991 to 1994. In 1995, she joined the United States Attorney’s Office in the Central District of California, serving as an Assistant United States Attorney in the criminal division. There, she worked as a federal prosecutor in both the General Crimes and Public Corruption and Government Fraud sections, and was a member of the office’s Organized Crime Strike Force from 1999 to 2000. She served as Deputy Chief of the General Crimes section from 2000 to 2002. Judge Nguyen was appointed to the state bench as Judge of the Superior Court of the County of Los Angeles in 2002 and remained a judge on that court until she was appointed to the federal bench in 2009.
